A chosen protagonist ventures out into the world, overcomes adversity and tries to redeem self and the world. Difficult encounters tend to be redeemed by positive outcomes, and the protagonist starts to realize an “inner destiny”. Along the way the hero wrestles between conflicting desires for power and love. If that sounds familiar, there’s a very good reason why. Present in everything from the stories we tell about our lives, through myths, folklore, contemporary literature and our movies, the Redemption Plot is the most prevalent story in Western culture.
With particular reference to Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) and the very latest research in narrative psychology, we’ll update the Hero’s Journey model and investigate what the Redemption Plot entails and why it so particularly resonates with our lives.
