David Caffrey is an award-winning Irish director and producer known for shaping iconic British and Irish dramas, including Line of Duty, Love/Hate, and Peaky Blinders, with a career spanning acclaimed film and television.
DAVID CAFFREY is an Irish film and television director, producer and writer born in Dublin and raised in Greystones, County Wicklow. He began his filmmaking career making award-winning short films such as The Connivers, Bantams and Bolt, which garnered early industry attention and led him into feature filmmaking and television.
Caffrey’s feature directorial debut was the critically acclaimed comedy-thriller Divorcing Jack (1998), adapted from Colin Bateman’s bestselling novel and starring David Thewlis and Rachel Griffiths. He followed this with On the Nose (2001), featuring Dan Aykroyd and Robbie Coltrane, and Grand Theft Parsons (2003), starring Johnny Knoxville and Michael Shannon.
Transitioning into television, Caffrey directed episodes of a wide range of acclaimed series. His early TV work includes Aristocrats for BBC/WGBH and Monarch of the Glen, before moving into high-profile drama. He directed episodes of Raw, Wild at Heart and The Commander, and went on to direct the pilot and multiple episodes of the hit crime drama Line of Duty for BBC/World Productions.
Caffrey has been a key creative force behind some of the most successful British and Irish series of the past decade. He directed the pilot and numerous episodes across five seasons of Love/Hate for RTÉ/Octagon, helping shape the series into a cultural phenomenon. He also directed episodes of Stan Lee’s Lucky Man for Sky/NBC Universal.
More recent television credits include directing all episodes of Taken Down (RTÉ/Fremantle) and the pilot plus all episodes of Prime Suspect: Tennison for ITV/Noho. He directed the entire fourth season of the BAFTA-winning Peaky Blinders for BBC/Tiger Aspect/CM Productions, and served as director and executive producer on The Alienist: Angel of Darkness for Paramount/TNT, directing multiple episodes of the series.
Caffrey’s most recent work expands into contemporary drama and genre television, like Moonhaven, The Fear Index, Whitstable Pearl, Sexy Beast and The Gentlemen, demonstrating his versatility across crime, thriller, and dramatic narratives.
His work has earned industry recognition, including multiple Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) Awards for Best Director for Love/Hate. David directed the entire season 4 of Peaky Blinders which currently holds the shows only best series BAFTA Award.
