At its core, Dialogue is Conversation with a Purpose. What a character says must advance the story. That is dialogue’s core function. But how a character speaks reveals something about their personality and inner nature. That is where dialogue becomes more than a means to an end. Great dialogue entertains the reader because it helps to bring each character to life.
In this session, Scott Myers explores how character-driven screenwriting leads you to hear each character’s distinctive voice. Ask key biographical questions – Who they are? Where they are? Why they are? How they are? – to immerse yourself into the lives of your characters and embrace their unique individuality. Use Interviews, Monologue, and Free Scene exercises to hear each character’s distinctive voice.
