This question is the cornerstone of success as a writer.
We all have doubts in our work. We all have insecurity about our abilities. We all know about those flaws in the plot that we have covered up brilliantly, but covered up nonetheless. We all know that our characters could be better written. Ack! It’s enough to make you want to get under your duvet and watch a whole season of Breaking Bad, even though you’ve already seen it!
But here is the thing.
To feel these doubts and insecurities should remind us all that we are in fact punching above our weight.
And that is AWESOME!
Because true growth and potential for success comes when we push through the fear of failure, the doubts… and we commit and do it anyway.
So what are the tactics we can use to overcome these very common issues? Surely there are ones that will really help us all, aside from just forcing ourselves to sit down and do it (which of course we need to do)?
This is what The Rewrite Toolkit with Pilar Alessandra will address directly over the weekend of June 11th and 12th in London.
I asked Pilar for her thoughts on this and she shared…
‘It’s the lack of confidence we all suffer from as writers that holds us back, and the answer is of course writing in the first place, but then rewriting. I have these same concerns come up when I run my rewrite weekends out here in LA. I have to convince my writers that they can take this class even without having completed their first draft – that they’ll still learn some advanced writing techniques and that it will help them to actually finish their scripts, as well as redrafting.’
If you don’t know who Pilar is, she is a former Hollywood studio story analyst, the author of ‘The Coffee Break Screenwriter’ and has been the highest rated speaker at the London Screenwriters’ Festival for the last five years. She is truly extraordinary teacher. There are some quotes from past workshops below.
So if you want to reinvigorate your writing, kick yourself out of procrastination, face up to your fears and blocks and learn to utilise new and proven screenwriting strategies, you should come to The Rewrite Toolkit with Pilar on June 11th and 12th.
Expect to write and get IMMEDIATELY into action. Expect to leave with a whole new toolkit which will transform your work immediately. And a toolkit you can use over and over.
