Katja Meier is a screenwriter and producer who founded Zenka Films to challenge industry ageism and create opportunities for women over 50 in film and television.
After being selected for a prestigious female writers’ scheme backed by Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, she faced consistent pressure to make her characters younger, with one executive claiming women over 50 weren’t “a valid audience.” Rather than compromise her vision, Meier established her own production company and independently produced the pilot for “$hare,” a series about 59-year-old Lena Corbyn’s quest to transform the British-Swiss mining company she inherits. The pilot was filmed in challenging conditions in the Swiss Alps with a 25-person crew working pro bono, demonstrating Meier’s ability to inspire creative collaboration and marshal resources.
She is pioneering an innovative production and distribution model through the independent streaming service Olyn, where viewers can directly support the series’ development and join its creative community. Her approach challenges traditional industry hierarchies – even the show’s credits are presented alphabetically to reflect her commitment to equality.
Through her work, Meier aims to create both compelling content and a prototype for a more inclusive, equitable production model in an industry where women made up only 23% of creators on original television series in 2023-24.
