One of my favourite parts of the London Screenwriters’ Festival is the Scriptchat section where, after selected sessions, there is an opportunity to go sit round a table with a speaker and chat further with them in an informal setting. More than anything else at the festival, this reinforces the feeling of screenwriters as a huge worldwide family who can sit and chat together, learning from each other.
Luke Ryan, is probably someone that you’d have to earn that privilage with in Hollywood, but he’s incredibly approachable here at the festival, having started out as a writer attending seminars like we are now. He’s also a vast wealth of knowledge and has a great sense of humour. I’m truly glad I got to meet him at this year’s festival. Even attending every year like I do, I don’t get to all the seminars so this is my first time hearing Luke speak. It was a great session to enjoy on the first day of the festival and I feel armed with knowledge now that whatever I write in the year ahead, I want it to be writing that is worth a piece of my life and that will be worth a piece of other people’s lives to make happen on screen.
