Marcus Markou gained acclaim with his debut feature film, Papadopoulos & Sons (2012), a comedy-drama that he wrote, directed, and self-distributed.
Defying traditional routes, Marcus successfully brought the film to cinemas in the UK with the second highest screen average in its opening weekend on a P&A budget of just £40k. The film was picked up by ARTE, Netflix, the BBC (among others) and secured a 100-screen release in Germany.
His latest feature, The Wife and Her House Husband (2023), further cemented Marcus’s reputation as an independent sky-diving filmmaker and distributor of his own work. He hired the Prince Charles for three weeks, which triggered national press reviews which in turn landed him a theatrical release in Australia and distribution – proving that “four walling” still has a place for indies.
This movie can now be seen on Amazon Prime. His short film Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times continues to be a viral hit on Youtube and is approaching 4m views. As a veteran contributor at the Screenwriters’ Festival, Marcus brings invaluable insights into self-distribution, independent filmmaking, and the art of telling stories that matter.
