Sophia’s love of storytelling has driven a 15-year career in drama and comedy, nurturing a range of dynamic new talent from all over the UK. Her training in psychology laid the foundation of a love of characters (although she is adamant, she doesn’t put theory to practice in day to day life!)
Growing up in Manchester, her career started in theatre; she set up two theatre companies that led to her meeting and working with Chris Morris on Four Lions. Her love of theatre has taken her to leading in various literary departments, such as West Yorkshire Playhouse and The Royal Exchange Manchester. She also ventured into the world of Radio Drama for the BBC, which was a fantastic training ground for the world of continuing drama; Sophia went on to script and story edit on EastEnders, Emmerdale and script produce and produce on Holby City.
She has also worked further afield and created a new TV and radio drama series with BBC Media Action in Bangladesh, where she trained new writers on a continuing medical drama series and trained up the local crew in producing high end content in Dhaka. The medical series is still on air.
Sophia has been an Executive Producer for children’s and YA content at the BBC, working across the entire in-house slate, including some of her favourite shows from when she was growing up in the north.
Sophia moved into development roles at various independent production companies, sourcing new writing talent, securing original IP, and working ideas from the ground to secure commissions across various broadcasters and networks. She is passionate about regional voices and telling stories from worlds in which are still underrepresented, something which she doesn’t take lightly and plays a crucial part in any role that she takes on.
Sophia joined the team at HTM Television in early 2023 and is thrilled to be using her contacts within talent and agent circles to be driving bold new ideas for the screen under Jed Mercurio’s leadership. When she isn’t in a writers room brainstorming a dark comedy or exciting new thriller, she can usually be found exploring various music festivals across the globe or on a dance floor!
What am I looking for… I love reading new materials that comes from the heart. I have an eclectic slate, from sci-fi to gothic horror to period and so forth and what they all have in common is wonderfully crafted characters who we want to stay with and narratives that share something brave, something familiar, something new, something honest, pure and raw – drivers at the heart of the worlds that the writers are creating and wanting to explore. If i read a sample script that captures this honestly and purely, set in any space of their choosing, they will have win me over! That and a love for music always helps…!
