Breaking news at the London Screenwriters’ Festival was that from next year, the organisation will be producing a new awards ceremony for screenwriting in the UK by way of the British Screenwriters’ Awards. Something that’s been lacking from the British writing scene where so many incredible screenwriting talents reside. I know from my own film’s BIFA nomination what a great boost it is to be even considered for a national award, both professionally and in terms of how you challenge yourself and I am thrilled that for established and new writers this awards is coming into being in 2014.
This year, in order to celebrate news of the awards the festival presented one Eszterhas Award and the inaugural trophy was presented by Joe Eszterhas himself to ‘Shifty’ and ‘Welcome To The Punch’ writer/director Eran Creevy.
Eran spoke of being honoured to be receiving the London Screenwriters’ Festival’s first screenwriting award “..and from Joe, a complete screenwriting legend and having him share his experience here with all of us filmmakers has been beyond words.”
The award, shaped like an ice pick to honour the murder weapon of Joe’s ‘Basic Instinct’ screenplay will form an annual part of the British Screenwriters’ Awards.
