The tale of the sale: Physchological tips to tranform your pitching by Alexis Howell-Jones

Not many people remember the tagline to Eddie Murphy’s 1997 film “Metro”, but my memory of it lasted much longer than my memory of the film. That tagline? “Life is a negotiation”.  And it’s true. Eddie Murphy calls it a negotiation. Psychiatrist Dr. Raj Persaud described the tactics used in interpersonal relationships as like a seduction. As a big Glengarry Glen Ross fan, I liken it to a sale – and you’re selling yourself as a writer as much as your projects.  There’s an iconic scene in the film of Glengarry Glen Ross where Alec Baldwin lectures salesmen on sales technique. It’s too sweary to quote, but all you need to know is that during his speech, he turns over a blackboard with two acronyms on it.  And what’s on it is important for writers. The first acronym: A.B.C. = Always Be Closing It’s great advice to writers. I use this regularly to encourage fellow writers to get their projects finished.  But the second is the important one here. Ready?  A.I.D.A. = Attention. Interest. Desire. Action.  This is really important to us writers. Just ask any good salesperson. I go through this acronym – or a more writer-friendly version – A.I.M. – below. So here goes:

Relationships are transactions – not your one-way demands

We want our needs met by execs. But what about their needs? There’s a transactional nature to relationships.  Both sides should get something out of it. Recognise it’s not all about you.

Find what the other person needs that they don’t have (their “unmet need”) and offer it as collateral for them helping you in return.

The best sales strategy there is

You could reason with someone, or even threaten them – but manipulation is the best technique to bring someone on board to your ideas.

Manipulation has a bad rep but can be used for good. Studies show that if I display a prominent image of a superhero so people see it then ask them to do braver things, they’re more likely to.

Taking A.I.M.: Attention. Interest. Maintenance.

Salespeople know how to strategically manipulate a relationship to increase the prospect of a sale using these principles.
  • So get attention. Consider original scripts – unmet needs the exec has – and start your pitch in a non-generic, alluring way. Show confidence with a polished pitch.
  • Keep interest by describing the big emotional beats of your script.
  • Maintain relationships with execs by contacting them with further information to get their attention and interest.
So work on manipulating the relationship – that added advantage in creating great relationships.

Why I booked next year before I even left by Helen Tompson

Last year, I partnered with Chris Jones to add to the official LSF podcast. It’s now up and running, and it’s opened doors I didn’t even know were there. So I came back this year already knowing just being at LSF could change things. What I didn’t expect was quite how much when at the closing ceremony I put my money where my mouth is!
